Holding Pattern vs Procedure Turn
A holding in lieu of procedure turn (HILPT) is a procedure that uses a holding pattern to perform a course reversal, but it's not the same as a procedure turn:
- HILPT: A HILPT is a course reversal that uses the entry techniques of a hold. It's not a full hold, but it can be used as a hold. HILPTs are usually depicted on charts with a thick black line.
- Procedure turn: A procedure turn is a maneuver that can be performed using the holding technique, the 45/180, or the 80/260 method.
A HILPT is often used when an airport doesn't have a procedure turn, or when radar vectoring isn't available. It's also used to establish an approach to an airport.
Holding patterns are used to maintain position and ensure clearance from other aircraft and terrain. They can be depicted on Standard Terminal Arrival Route (STAR) charts, and on instrument approach charts after a missed approach.
